Falling Leaves

A “meet-cute” set in Providence, Rhode Island on the first day of fall 1999.

Autumn Nicole Hayes is a 21-year-old college senior who is majoring in public policy and international relations. She’s had a rough life and tries to keep her past a secret since everyone pushes her away when they learn the truth. Feeling alone in the world, she rescued two Maine Coon kittens she named Leia and Han two months ago. She is about to start an internship at a prestigious public relations firm that was arranged by her advisor.

Harrison Beau Williams is a 24-year-old mechanical engineer. He comes from “old money” and has had family in Providence since the city was founded. He has a yellow Labrador Retriever named Daisy that he bought over a year ago. When he’s not spending time with his dog or hanging out with old school friends, he enjoys running and rowing.

Music helps set the mood while I write. That is why the inspiration playlists play such a vital role in my writing process. These are the songs that inspired the First Day of Fall short story Falling Leaves:

Autumn Leaves - by Leslie Odom, Jr.

This is the perfect song to start an inspiration playlist that takes place on the first day of fall.

Single White Female - by Chely Wright

This is Autumn’s theme song.

I Ain't Goin' Nowhere - by Martina McBride

A number of the songs on this playlist represent the employees she meets at the public relations firm. This one is for Jessica, who Autumn is supposed to shadow.

Partners In Crime - by Jim Brickman with Dave Koz

This song is for Holly, another employee.

Picture This - by Jim Brickman

This song is for Richard, another employee. (He is dating Holly.)

To Make You Feel My Love - by Trisha Yearwood

This song is for Kathleen, another employee.

Wonderful Tonight - by Eric Clapton

This song is for Brad, another employee.

Someone Like You - by Shawn Colvin

This song is for Courtney, another employee. (She is dating Brad.)

I’m Alright - by Jo Dee Messina

This song is for Maggie, another employee.

The Very Thought of You - by Frank Sinatra

This song is for John, the public relations firm partner who arranged Autumn’s internship.

Before Me And You - by SHeDAISY

This song is for John’s wife who happens to be visiting her husband that day.

The Fall Song - by Bridgit Mendler

There are not a lot of songs about fall. With the number of references to the season in the song, I had to include it.

Just To See You Smile - by Tim McGraw

This is Harrison’s theme song.

It’s Your Love - by Tim McGraw with Faith Hill

This is an awesome song. It is the song Autumn and Harrison dance to at their wedding.
